Late spring brings two traditions to Mack Molding – the return of the interns and housekeeping. To help you learn about the latter, we enlisted RPI’s Margaret Smith, Communications Intern, to create a video highlighting how we keep our facilities looking top notch!

Mack Makes Major Investments in Vermont Operations
New Equipment Boosts Sheet Metal and Machining Capabilities at Company’s Headquarters
ARLINGTON, VT. (April 4, 2018) – Mack Molding has welcomed spring with capital investments at its Vermont-based headquarters.
The leading custom plastics molder and supplier of contract manufacturing services continues to experience heightened commercial activity, and the new equipment is geared toward meeting current needs and future opportunities.
“We are seeing a significant wave of new product development, the most in a decade,” Mack President Jeff Somple said. “From robots to 3D printers to new medical devices, our customers have put their confidence in Mack’s manufacturing expertise and the experience of our team. With the tax laws making it easier to facilitate these types of investments the time was right to commission the tools we need to ensure success for Mack and our customers.”
The largest pieces of equipment were recently delivered to Mack’s headquarters in Arlington, Vt., including a new, fully automated laser for sheet metal fabrication and two computerized machining centers.
These build on additions Mack made in 2017 that expanded the specialty materials and thickness of gauges that can be handled while increasing the capacity to meet customers’ milling and turning demands. Each investment also benefits the Company’s business model of bringing value to customers through a full suite of vertically integrated services.
According to Somple, Mack had planned ahead for the possibility for tax reform by creating a list of infrastructure needs that could be met under the right conditions.
“While the new laser and machining centers represent our most visible investments, we have seized the opportunity to make a number of improvements at all our Vermont facilities to meet our day-to-day operational needs,” he noted. “When you consider we have been hiring new talent across the organization as well, it is an exciting time for our business.”

Mack and its Interns Highlighted in Wall Street Journal Article
We are proud to say Mack and some of its former interns turned full-time employees were featured in the Wall Street Journal article, “Small Business Thinks Big About Recruiting: Employers in a tight job market are offering vacation money to new recruits, bolstering internships, scouting new locations.”
Mack prides itself on giving its interns tangible work examples for their resumes while helping them build their professional network and employment skills – not to mention allowing students to have a measurable impact on a $350 million company. Interns are assigned a key project that has been vetted by senior management, and at the end of the program are invited to present their work to senior staff. Throughout the program interns are also have access to Mack’s significant recreational and fitness spaces, educational lunch and learns and exposure to the many facets of Mack’s business, including the company’s facilities. While the majority of Mack’s interns are engineering students fulfilling roles on our manufacturing, engineering and customer program teams, several of the Company’s departments host students, including Human Resources, Finance, Purchasing, Sales and Communications – meaning there is tremendous opportunity for majors of any kind.
It has been an extremely rewarding return on the Company’s workforce development efforts, while bringing new energy and ideas to the business. In the last two years 15 former interns have returned to Mack in full-time positions!
Mack Implementing ISO 9001 and 13485 Revisions
Company Mobilizes Resources & Personnel to Maintain Competitive Advantage
ARLINGTON, Vt. (Feb. 6, 2018) – Mack Molding, a leading custom plastics molder and supplier of contract manufacturing services, is in the midst of systematizing ISO 9001:2015 and ISO 13485:2016 – the fifth and third revisions, respectively, of the international standards for general quality management and assurance, as well as for medical devices.
Mack’s ISO certifications are critical to not only assuring its customers their products will meet expectations, but also in the Company’s business continuity. More than 140 members of its manufacturing, quality, sales, engineering and leadership teams recently gathered for an in-depth discussion on what the new standards mean for Mack and how they will be implemented. Next Mack will train internal auditors to help ensure it is ready to become certified following audits scheduled to take place in July.
“When we first implemented ISO 9001 in 1990 we were one of a handful of injection molders to do so,” said Mack Molding President Jeff Somple. “It was a great selling point at the time, but today it is a necessity – a license to do business in the highly technical markets we serve. In the early 2000s we implemented ISO 13485 to gain access to the medical device industry, and as a result today we are a stronger, more diverse organization. It has proven to be a competitive advantage for Mack, and the good news is we are already doing most of what the new standards require.”
A significant piece of the new standards is based on risk management and ensuring employees are aligned with organizational goals. This ties in neatly with Mack’s existing strategy for growth. Known internally as the Seven Key Success factors, the Company uses intelligent business growth, total customer satisfaction, employee satisfaction, profitability, competitive readiness, risk management and environmental sustainability as its guiding principles.
“We are well on our way to achieving what ISO, and many of our customers, are looking for,” Somple added. “It goes far beyond what most organizations would consider for a quality management system, emphasizing the management piece in ways that have already proven to be our strength. Risk-based thinking is a critical part of engineering, however, we cannot rest on our laurels. That is why Mack is committing the resources and the time to get it right.”
