Mack Interns Have a Big Impact During Summer 2021 Program

August 11, 2021 by Larry Hovish Leave a Comment

Pictured, from front, left, during a recent tour of Mack Prototype’s Gardner, Mass., facility are interns Arianna Barrios, UVM; Shaylee McBride, Princeton; Lauren Mulroy, Grove City College; Matthew Viscido, Purdue University; Guy Milliman, University of Denver; Ben McAlonie, RIT; Nicole McCarvill, Stony Brook University; Isabelle Nolan, UVM; and Hayden Gallo, Notre Dame. Pictured, from back, left, are Victoria Pembroke, Bentley; Ashlee Billert, Sage College; Liam Murphy, RIT; Daniel Mulroy, Grove City College; Jack Rogge, Cornell; Mack Prototype President Greg Cebular and Devin McCabe, MIT.

Three Former Interns Join Company Full-Time

ARLINGTON, Vt. (Aug. 11, 2021) – It has been a productive summer at Mack Molding thanks not only to strong demand for the Company’s full suite of contract manufacturing services, but also to Mack’s summer interns.

Mack welcomed 15 students into its 2021 program, including 13 at its Headquarters in Arlington, Vt., as well as one each at its Cavendish, Vt., facility and wholly-owned subsidiary, Mack Prototype, in Gardner, Mass. While this year’s cohort is predominantly made up of engineering students, other represented majors include nursing, finance and business administration.

“Due to COVID and our desire to give our interns the safest environment possible, this was not the largest internship program we have ever had,” said Mack Molding President Jeff Somple. “In terms of impact, however, this group shined bright. After a year of lock downs and remote learning, our students were excited to be on location getting truly hands-on experience.”

Though Mack welcomed students into summer roles for many years, the Company’s modern internship program was created in 2011 as a response to workforce development demands. Each intern is assigned a project that is based on actual business needs and approved by senior management, providing them with real-world experience they can show prospective employers.

Besides the job, Mack offers its interns a host of other skill and network building experiences. This includes a series of “Lunch ’n Learns” where senior staff members and seasoned employees present on various aspects of the business, conduct facility tours and help develop skills such as maintaining a professional social media presence. By the end of the summer, the students turn the tables, presenting the results of their projects to their peers and Mack’s senior management. Additionally, interns are paired with young professionals who serve as mentors. They also are offered memberships to a local golf club or gym, giving students a chance to be active while networking with fellow Mack team members and the community.

“I’ve really enjoyed my time at Mack, especially experiencing how all the different departments contribute to getting finished goods out the door,” said Mack Intern Nicole McCarvill, a mechanical engineering major at Stony Brook University, in Stony Brook, N.Y. “It was pretty cool to see how my efforts to organize a manufacturing line had a direct impact on operations, making work easier for others and improving productivity.”

This year’s program was funded in part by the Vermont Department of Labor’s 2021 Vermont Internship Program. Designed to connect Vermont employers with student-interns from regional technical centers or postsecondary educational institutions, the program helps develop the region’s workforce by giving students a chance to build careers in the state.

“The state of Vermont shares Mack’s commitment to giving these young professionals an opportunity to see how rewarding a career and a life in Southern Vermont can be,” Somple noted. “As we all strive to recover from the pandemic, retaining young professionals in, and attracting them to, Vermont is critical to the strength of the industries that do business here.”

To date Mack has hosted over 100 interns, with more than 20 returning to full-time positions after graduating. The Company’s most recent recruits include Manufacturing Engineers, Andy Romack and Benjamin Vadakin, and Accounts Payable Specialist, Austin Hawley.

Picture of Andy RomackRomack is now based in the Company’s Headquarters facility in Arlington, Vt. He previously served as a Design and Tooling Engineering Intern, becoming familiar with Mack’s processes and culture while assisting in the production of injection molded parts and medical devices. This included designing a masking solution for parts requiring paint and EMI shielding. He has a bachelor of science degree in biomedical engineering from the University of Rochester, in Rochester, N.Y., where he received the Biomedical Engineering Society Award for outstanding presentations.

Picture of Ben VadakinFormer Manufacturing Engineering Intern, Vadakin, also is based at Mack’s Headquarters. During his time as an intern, Vadakin contributed to process development on complex electromechanical devices through interactive work instructions and on-site training methods. He also implemented numerous project management systems to help optimize product launches and track team defined metrics.  He has bachelor and associate of science degrees from Vermont Tech in Williston, Vt., and previously served in the United States Marine Corps.

Picture of Austin HawleyHawley, currently serving as an Accounts Payable Specialist, first returned to Mack full-time as Manufacturing Clerk after previously serving as a Manufacturing Intern in 2019. During his tenure, Austin supported multiple manufacturing lines by reconciling pull requests with inventory, facilitating delivery to the line with in-stock materials and initiating purchase requests when out of stock. He has a bachelor of business administration degree focused on management and marketing from Castleton University, with a minor in economics.

Mack Prototype Adds New Product Introduction to Service Offering

August 10, 2021 by Larry Hovish 1 Comment

Patrick Merrill Appointed Manufacturing Engineer for New NPI Area

Picture showing manufacturing occuring in Mack Prototype's new NPI area.

Mack Prototype Manufacturing Engineer Patrick Merrill works in the Company’s New Product Introduction area. Based in Gardner, Mass., the 15,000 square-foot space is dedicated to helping customers take their ideas from early stage manufacturing into full production.

GARDNER, Mass. (Aug. 10, 2021) – Mack Prototype, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Mack Molding Co. focused on prototyping and low-volume manufacturing, has announced the addition of New Product Introduction (NPI) services to its portfolio.

Through its NPI platform, Mack Prototype will be offering manufacturing and engineering support in 15,000 square feet of dedicated space off the production floor to help companies bring their ideas to fruition, with another 20,000 square feet available for expansion. In addition to fixturing, assembly and testing, the Company’s new product launch pad area will feature real-time, cloud-based data and work instructions so customers will never be far away from the production floor.

“With supply chain and design for manufacturing services, as well as molding and machining capabilities, right on site, we are uniquely positioned to give small program productions large program-level engineering support,” said Mack Prototype President Greg Cebular. “Our size gives us the agility necessary to adapt to the changing needs of early-stage manufacturing, while our experience and support from the broader Mack Molding family means customers can move into full program launch when they are ready.”

The benefits of Mack Prototype’s speed and flexibility include onsite prototyping and machining that allows customers to modify their parts on the fly and nimble document control that allows for quick engineering changes. According to Cebular, this dedicated space is primed for established companies and startups seeking support for low volume builds – a place to build their production plan while working through design changes, the development of work instructions and build plans.

Once a program is ready for full-scale production it can be seamlessly moved into one of Mack Molding’s larger contract manufacturing facilities. A number of benefits aid in this transition, including sourcing parts from the approved vendor list (AVL) used in the NPI build, the fact that work instructions are based in a shared cloud-based system and the fabrication of metal and plastic parts on the same equipment. Additionally, since the program managers, manufacturing engineers and quality engineers are engaged throughout a customer’s NPI experience, production operators can be trained in advance of the transfer.

Picture of Mack Prototype ME Patrick MerrillLeading the efforts will be Mack Prototype’s new Manufacturing Engineer Patrick Merrill. With 10 years of engineering experience, including the medical device industry, Merrill has been involved with new products from inception to commercialization. Merrill most recently served as senior manufacturing engineer for Medical Creations Inc./Xtremity in Denver, Colo., where he also had previously served as a mechanical engineer. Earlier he had built engineering experience with KIC Consultants, and Rock Tools Attachments, both in Denver. Merrill has a master of science in mechanical engineer with a focus in biomechanics from the University of Colorado, Denver, and a bachelor of science in mining and mineral engineering from the Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University in Blackburg, Va.

“Patrick is a great addition to our team,” Cebular noted. “His broad experience with managing inventories, quality system implementation, design for manufacturing, benchtop testing and developing manufacturing procedures make him uniquely qualified to lead this effort to provide customers with a new pathway to production.”

Mack Prototype Focuses On Its Future

July 30, 2021 by Larry Hovish Leave a Comment

Under the leadership of new President Greg Cebular Mack Prototype is taking a hard look at its future, with an eye toward what customers are looking for in modern, low-volume manufacturing services.

As part of this process, Cebular recently invited five students from the Tufts entrepreneurship program to help the team get more insights into the competitive landscape.

The students – Frank Hua, Robert Ranalli, Spencer Alligood, Ciaran Hourihan and Tanner Gordon – were part of a marketing course taught by legendary entrepreneur Jack Derby that puts students in real life experiences to hone their business acumen and entrepreneurial spirit. CEO of Derby Management, Derby also is a professor at Tufts. He has a long history of running strategy sessions with Mack leadership, and the Company has sent members of its business development team to his sales management bootcamp.

As part of the project, the team conducted voice of the customer surveys, talked with current and past customers, as well as design firms, to learn about their experience with Mack Proto and how the company stacks up against its competition. They then paired their findings with competitive landscape research to conduct a SWOT analysis that will help build a roadmap to the organization’s future.

Key findings included improving the way customers can interact with the company digitally. Their research will lead to website enhancements aimed at fostering greater ease of use for customers seeking to upload files and obtain quotes, which Mack Proto plans to incorporate with its updated website planned for later this year.

An expert in traditional manufacturing technologies, such as injection molding and CNC machining, as well as modern additive manufacturing platforms, Cebular is bringing new energy to the organization. In addition to the marketing insights developed by the Tufts team, he is preparing to bring new technologies and services to Mack Proto’s portfolio.

A wholly-owned subsidiary of Mack Molding, Mack Proto offers 75,000 square feet of manufacturing in an ISO 13485 certified environment specializing in low-volume manufacturing, including rapid prototyping, such as 3D printing for small and large parts; rapid moldmaking; low-volume, small-part injection molding; CNC machining; cast urethane molding; and extensive painting and finishing operations.

As Mack Prototype evolves in the coming months we will keep you posted on each exciting stage!
